A serious collision has shut down the westbound lanes of Highway 1 at Deacon's Corner.

Oakbank RCMP were called to the area just after 7, Tuesday morning.

Tara Seel, Manitoba RCMP's media relations officer, says that roads are quite slippery in the area of the collision. She says a semi has jackknifed and is blocking traffic.

According to one motorist, a semi-tanker has taken out about a half dozen cars and trucks on the bridge over the Red River Floodway. Many of those vehicles are now in the ditch.

There is no word on the extent of injuries at this time.

The westbound lanes of Highway 1 are closed at Highway 207. Motorists are asked to avoid the area and to find an alternate route. It is unclear as to how long the roadway will be closed.

RCMP continue to investigate.
