An 82-year-old man is dead after trying to stop a business from being robbed.

The Winnipeg Police Service is sharing more details on the death of a senior and the day-long road closure. On Tuesday, authorities said a pedestrian was killed in the area of Logan Avenue and Tecumseh Street during rush hour. Now, police say the man was stopping a robbery.

"An 82-year-old male attempted to stop a break, enter and theft in progress at a business in the area of Logan Avenue and Tecumseh Street. The victim was struck and killed with a vehicle and the driver fled the area," the WPS says in a statement.

The man was transported to the hospital in critical condition, where he later died of his injuries.

This incident caused the closure of Logan Avenue between Tecumseh Street and Arlington Street for most of the day.

Authorities were looking for a tow truck believed to have been involved in a vehicle crash at Tecumseh Street and Logan Avenue at around 8:20 a.m. and have since located the vehicle.

A 22-year-old man is facing charges including:

  • Manslaughter
  • Failure to Stop after Accident Resulting in Death
  • Break Enter & Theft 

He is in custody.
