Two people are reportedly dead and one person is in critical condition following a shooting at a Texas church the first Sunday of Christmas.

The shooting took place at the West Freeway Church of Christ in White Settlement, near Fort Worth, Texas.

A spokesperson with the Fort Worth Fire Department, Mike Drivdahl, spoke with media on Sunday. Drivdahl says that police received a call for somebody suffering from gunshot wounds at the church at 9:57 a.m.

When emergency crews arrived on scene they found three patients, Drivdahl says.

A number of media outlets are reporting that two of the patients have died. However, Drivdahl says he cannot confirm any deaths, but did say the shooter is believed to be one of the patients.

Kaley Johnson from the Fort Worth Star Telegram reports that two other people were injured when they ducked for cover.

In a statement posted online, Texas Governor Greg Abbott says "Our hearts go out to the victims and families of those killed in the evil act of violence that occurred at the West Freeway Church of Christ. Places of worship are meant to be sacred, and I am grateful for the church members who acted quickly to take down the shooter and help prevent further loss of life. Cecilia and I ask all Texans to join us in praying for the White Settlement community and for all those affected by this horrible tragedy."

Shooting occurred during communion

The Grand Prairie (Texas) News reports that the assailant fired a shotgun during communion.

Witnesses have reportedly stated that another church member fired their weapon taking down the gunman.

The church's service was live-streamed, and a still image taken from the video that is circulating online shows the church member confronting the shooter.
