Winnipeg residents have voted to keep their mayor and to keep the city's landmark intersection closed to foot traffic, at least for now.

Winnipeggers cast their ballots yesterday, leading to a second term for Bowman.

Winnipeg voters also cast ballots in a plebiscite on whether to re-open the giant intersection of Portage and Main to pedestrians.

That corner has been off limits to crossing on foot since 1979, and last night, residents voted to keep it that way.

Meanwhile, there are five new city councillors and 10 incumbents returning to their seats.

Sherri Rollins takes over for the outgoing Jenny Gerbasi in Fort Rouge-Fort Garry.

Markus Chambers is councillor in the St.Norbert-Seine River ward. He replaces Janice Lukes who left the ward to represent the newly created Waverly West.

Shawn Nawson is the new councillor for Transcona. He replaces Russ Wyatt, who stepped down this year after being councillor in the area for 16 years.

Kelvin Klein, former publisher and CEO of the Winnipeg Sun will replace the outgoing Marty Morantz in the Charlsewood-Tuxedo ward. Marty Morantz decided to step down so he could run in the upcoming federal election.

And Vivian Santos will replace her former boss Mike Pagtakhan in Point Douglas. Pagtakhan decided to not to run for re-election and to follow other career opportunities.
