A significant police presence is in the West Broadway neighbourhood following an early-morning shooting which has claimed the lives of three people, and has left another two victims in critical condition.

The Winnipeg Police Service says officers were called to the 100 block of Langside Street just after 4 a.m. Reports said that several people had been injured, and emergency responders located five people with gunshot wounds.

An adult male and an adult female were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Three additional victims were located and transported to hospital in critical condition, where one of the male victims succumbed to his injuries. A man and woman remain in hospital in critical condition.

The WPS says that the Homicide Unit continues to investigate and is tight-lipped on more information at this time. They say officers are still working to identify the victims' identities, and notifications to next of kin are pending.

"The Winnipeg Police Service Forensic Services Unit will be on scene for an extended period due to the gravity of this incident," the release says.

Police said that more information would be shared in the coming days, and they did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether any suspects have been identified or taken into custody at this time.
