Number of people killed on Manitoba roads over weekend rises to 7

Police are investigating a number of collisions in Manitoba that have claimed the lives of six people, including a pedestrian.

The first collision occurred just west of Shoal Lake, Man. on Highway 42 around 2 p.m. Friday. 

A semi hauling grain collided with an anhydrous truck. The Manitoba RCMP alleges that the northbound semi, which was travelling on Provincial Road 139 West, proceeded across Highway 42 when it was unsafe to do so. 

The driver of the anhydrous truck was declared deceased on scene. Police say he was not wearing a seatbelt. The driver of the semi was taken to hospital with minor injuries

Shoal Lake RCMP are continuing to investigate.

Then, just after 10 p.m. on Friday evening, emergency crews were called to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 12 and Two Mile Road just south of Ste. Anne.

Steinbach RCMP responded to the call and say that the initial investigation has determined that a car travelling south on Highway 12 collided with an SUV that was crossing the highway at Two Mile Road.

The driver of the SUV, a 71-year-old man, and the front passenger, a 69-year-old woman, both from the RM of Ste. Anne, were pronounced deceased at the scene. A 47-year-old woman from Saskatchewan who was in the backseat and required extrication was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the car, a 19-year-old male from Tyndall, Man., was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

STARS air ambulance was requested at the scene but due to high winds they were unable to respond.

Steinbach RCMP continues to investigate.

In the early morning hours of Sunday, emergency crews responded to the area of Sargent Ave. and Empress St. in Winnipeg for a two-vehicle collision. 

A stolen van ran a red light and struck an SUV, with the occupants of the stolen vehicle fleeing the scene on foot. 

An 81-year-old woman had to be extracted from the vehicle and was rushed to hospital in unstable condition. She later succumbed to her injuries.

A 45-year-old male from the SUV was also taken to hospital and is expected to recover.

Members of the WPS traffic division have taken over the investigation and say that the stolen vehicle was travelling at a high rate of speed at the time of the collision. They continue to investigate. 

At 10:35 a.m. on Sunday, Beausejour RCMP, RCMP Eastman Traffic Services and Springfield Police responded to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 15, three km east of Anola, in the RM of Springfield.

Initial investigation has determined that a car travelling east, went into oncoming traffic and collided with an SUV going west, on Highway 15, in the RM of Springfield.

The driver of the car, a 45-year-old male from the RM of Hanover and front passenger, a 49-year-old male from Steinbach, were pronounced deceased at the scene. The passenger, an adult male, was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. They were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision.

The driver and sole occupant of the SUV, an adult male, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Beausejour RCMP continue to investigate.

On Sunday evening around 11:30 police and emergency crews in Winnipeg responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian at the intersection of Portage Avenue and Berry Street.   

An adult female was lying in the roadway and seriously injured. She was transported to hospital in unstable condition and later succumbed to her injuries. 

Investigators have identified the victim as 24-year-old Shannon Joan Marie Romaniuk of Winnipeg. 

Members of the Traffic Division have assumed the investigation and learned the victim was crossing Portage Avenue when she was struck by the suspect vehicle, described as a silver/grey late model SUV. The vehicle and occupant(s) left the scene after the collision and remain outstanding.
