You can give the environment a Christmas gift this year by keeping recyclable objects out of the landfill.

The City of Winnipeg is urging those celebrating the holidays to do so with the environment in mind. This includes a few simple things that you can do at every gathering.

After you have finished ripping the present open, make sure you recycle:

  • cardboard gift boxes
  • greeting cards
  • rigid plastic packaging

Unfortunately, some items can not be recycled, and find themselves on the naughty list, including:

  • ribbon and wrapping paper
  • foam packaging
  • gift bags (but they can easily be reused in future years)
  • plastic bags (but they can be reused for garbage bags, travel laundry bags, etc.)
  • lights

Any extra recycling can be taken to a 4R Winnipeg Depot or to a community recycling location for free. Extra garbage can be dropped off at Brady 4R Winnipeg Depot or you can call 311 to arrange a special pickup, both for a fee.

Many gifts are electronic or need batteries to run. If you want to get rid of your other electronics or replace the batteries, make sure you recycle them properly instead of throwing them in the garbage. You can bring batteries and electronics to 1777 Brady Road or 1120 Pacific Avenue for free.

Once Christmas is over, the tree will probably come down. All real trees can be dropped off at any Let's Chip In location. The locations will be open starting December 27, 2017, until January 31, 2018. Free wood chips will be available as well.
