A Winnipeg man is in police custody after he was caught breaking into a home with people inside the house.

Police were called around 3:00 a.m., for a report of a residential break and enter in progress in the Chalmers Park neighbourhood, the Winnipeg Police Service says in a release.

An adult resident was frightened and hiding within the residence when they made the call.

The WPS helicopter, AIR1, quickly arrived and observed a suspect using an object to damage property and smash the windows of a residence. Officers in AIR1 were able to illuminate the area and give updates for ground units that were en route.

When the General Patrol Units arrived, the suspect fled on foot and a short foot pursuit ensued. With the assistance of AIR1, police located him on Riverton Avenue. A conductive electrical weapon (Taser) was deployed, and the suspect was taken into custody.

A 20-year-old male of Winnipeg is facing fiving charges, including break and enter with intent, mischief over $5,000, possession of a weapon, resisting a peace officer, and escape lawful custody.
