Residents from a northern community are asking for improved transport conditions after a flight into a northern Manitoba community made a rough landing.

On January 19, 2020, at approximately 5 pm, a Perimeter Aviation flight landed in a snowbank.

The Perimeter Aviation flight departed from Thompson without incident. Eric Redhead, chief of the Shamattawa First Nation, says the plane veered off the runway and crashed into a snowbank when it tried to land in his community.

"The right propeller of the Metro aircraft was completely shattered upon running into the snowbank," a release from the Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Inc. says.

"I am concerned that this large corporation, which profits almost entirely off Northern First Nations, is letting our First Nations down."

“I am now rather concerned about the well-being of the Shamattawa residents who were on that plane. Everyone is physically okay, however, they are very shaken up. I am once again calling on Perimeter Aviation to step up and take steps to improve the air transport services they provide to citizens in Northern Manitoba,” Chief Redhead states in the release.

“Many of our communities do not have an all-weather road so air travel is the only option. I am concerned that this large corporation, which profits almost entirely off Northern First Nations, is letting our First Nations down," MKO Grand Chief Garrison Settee says in the release.

None of the 12 passengers including the one infant on board were injured.

Perimeter says it is investigating the cause of the crash and will be sharing the results when the investigation is complete.
