One of the oldest churches in the world has been uncovered.

A church found in an archaeological dig in Egypt is being said to be from the 4th Century.

The early Christian temple was discovered in the ancient port of Marea, near the city of Alexandria, by an archaeological team from the University of Warsaw, Poland. This dig, the research, and conservation of artifacts have been going on since 2000 reports First News.

Dr. Krzysztof Babraj, of the Museum of Archaeology in Kraków, says, “At the end of the last research season, under the floor of the basilica, we encountered a wall’s remains, which turned out to be the outer walls of an even older church."

The church was found underneath a basilica that had been destroyed by an earthquake. The ceramics and glass found within the church's wall date back to the mid-4th Century, according to archaeologists.

Babraj says the discovery is very significant. “We basically don’t know any remnants of churches from the neighboring metropolis Alexandria. Now we know how they could look, which is why it is so important to continue our research that we have just begun in the old church. "
