Asia Bibi is asking the French government for political asylum.

Bibi, a Pakistani Christian who spent decades on death row, says she wants to live in France as she is now in political exile from her home country.

"My greatest desire is to live in France," says Bibi, according to France 24.

Bibi fled to Canada with her family in 2018 after being pardoned from her 2010 conviction of blasphemy.

She is visiting France following the french publication of her book Enfin Libre! which translates to Finally Free. An English version of the book is due in September.

"France is the country from where I received my new life," says Bibi, calling French journalist Anne-Isabelle Tollet an "angel." Tollet advocated for the release of Bibi during her imprisonment and eventually assisted Bibi in writing her book.

Bibi recently received an honorary citizenship certificate from Paris, bestowed on her by the city's mayor Anne Hidalgo. The certificate had originally been granted to Bibi in 2014 while she was still imprisoned.

Enfin Libre! tells of Bibi's experiences while behind bars until her release in 2018 due to international outcry.

Bibi is currently living in Canada with her family in an undisclosed location under police protection.

"I am enormously grateful to Canada," Bibi says.

Bibi wants to continue to work with Tollet to help free others imprisoned in Pakistan for blasphemy.
