An infant is safe after being abducted by a woman on a bicycle.

Shortly before 10:50 p.m. on Wednesday, a 22-month-old boy was at a home in Steinbach being cared for by his babysitter. When a 56-year-old woman who the babysitter knew entered the home, taking the boy and fleeing on a bicycle.

RCMP Manitoba says the woman did not have permission to take the child, nor were any arrangements made previously to take him.

Steinbach RCMP arrived and began canvassing the neighbourhood, waking up understanding neighbours. They say at this time, RCMP had received leads and began following up.

"The Steinbach RCMP would like to thank the many people who were woken up early in the morning by officers looking for the child for their cooperation and understanding," RCMP Manitoba says in a statement.

The next morning, at 8:25 a.m., the child and suspect were found in Steinbach, safe and sound.

The baby is reunited with his mother.

The suspect was taken into custody where she remains at this time. She is facing an Abduction charge.
