The People's Party of Canada says its leader, Maxime Bernier, has returned to Montreal and cancelled the remainder of his Manitoba tour.

Bernier was arrested Friday afternoon just outside St. Pierre, south of Winnipeg, after RCMP alleges he violated public health orders.

In a news release, the People's Party says Bernier spent eight hours in jail and was released on the conditions he pays $1,000 bail and agrees not to break Manitoba law.

He will also have to appear in a Winnipeg courtroom on July 27.

The party says Bernier "vows to continue to fight to end the unjustified and disastrous lockdowns.''
