A Catholic Bishop is warning that possible changes coming to India's constitution could mean big trouble for Christians in that country.

Premier reports that "there are fears that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) want to change the law to make India a Hindu theocratic state."

Bishop Nazarene Soosai of the Kottar Diocese in southern India says that would be a disaster and that Christians "fear the day."

Soosai made the remarks to the Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need during the final round of elections in India. The world's largest democratic election recently wrapped up after seven rounds of voting over six weeks. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was elected to another five-year term.

Bishop Soosai said, "They say there is no other Hindu nation, so India must be the Hindu nation.

"They say we need to be a Hindu state in opposition to Pakistan which is Muslim and they think all the western countries are Christian - although they are really secular - and so they say we need a Hindu country."

Persecution of Christians has risen dramatically over the past few years in India since the BJP first took power in 2014.

Open Doors USA ranks India as the tenth most dangerous place in the world to be a Christian.

"Christians have been targeted by Hindu nationalist extremists more each year. Since the current ruling party took power in 2014, attacks have increased, and Hindu radicals believe they can attack Christians with no consequences," Open Doors said in their most recent World Watch List. "The view of the nationalists is that to be Indian is to be Hindu, so any other faith—including Christianity—is viewed as non-Indian. Additionally, in some regions of the country, converts to Christianity from Hinduism experience extreme persecution, discrimination and violence."

Soosai says that if the constitution is changed things will only continue to worsen for Christians.

"Broadly speaking, religious minorities are under attack," he said. "Minority rights are under threat and much infringed.

"And when you raise your voice for human rights they say you're not a patriot."
