Mayor Brian Bowman is emphasizing the importance of banding together as Winnipeg grieves.

A woman in her 60s was the first death due to COVID-19. Bowman is sending his condolences to the friends and family of the deceased.

“Today, we are grieving the first local loss of life-related to COVID-19. We’re in this together and we are grieving together. Our deepest condolences to the friends and family of the deceased," Bowman says in a statement.

To date, Manitoba has 39 cases of COVID-19, including the one confirmed loss.

"The tragic news of this loss of life is a stark reminder of the gravity of the global pandemic we are facing together. It reinforces how essential it is for all of us, as Winnipeggers, to diligently follow the direction of our health care and emergency professionals," Bowman says.

Bowman is encouraging Winnipeggers to find comfort in their communities.

"Our community will get through this by remaining vigilant and supporting each other,” he says.
