A teen is facing charges for accidentally shooting his friend while target practicing without authorization near Selkirk.

RCMP informed the media in a release that on Saturday, September 24, at approximately 12:55 p.m., Selkirk officers responded to a report of a 19-year-old teen having been accidentally shot on a rural property located off Road 84 N, north of Selkirk near Highway 59.

The 19-year-old male from Winnipeg was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and remains in stable condition.

Upon the initial investigation, officers determined that the teen, along with three of his friends, were target practicing by shooting at targets 25 metres away on a grassy area. It was when the victim began walking toward the targets that he was shot.

Selkirk RCMP arrested the 19-year-old who had fired at the victim but was released with a court appearance scheduled for January 13, 2023, in Selkirk. He is facing the following charges:

  • Careless Use of a Firearm
  • Discharge Firearm while being Reckless
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm

At the scene, officers located and seized four rifles and ammunition. Selkirk RCMP continues to investigate.
