Members of a Winnipeg church's men's ministry are taking an annual event and using it to help another congregation rise from the ashes after a devastating fire.

The fire broke out just before 4 a.m. on Aug. 23, at the Spanish Church of God Pentecost at the corner of Watt Street and Tweed Avenue, completely destroying the building.

After news broke, their sister church, Truth and Life Worship Centre, decided to use their annual men's ministry fundraiser to host a benefit relief concert.

"What we try to do every year is host a benefit relief concert for any disasters we see around Winnipeg or even abroad," Chris Vellany from TLWC's men's ministry says.

"So this year, we are putting on the concert for the Spanish Church, which is our sister church. It burned down on August 23," Chris Vellany, from Truth and Life Worship Centre's Men's Ministry, shared.

When asked if this was an easy decision to partner with the Spanish Church, Vellany agreed. "It's one of our sister churches, so it's close to home."

Two months after the fire, they're getting ready to host a night filled with gospel music.

"People can expect a two-hour show. The music will be very upbeat as we praise and worship. You're coming to not only a concert but also to worship God in this case," Vellany continued. "We're hoping to pack the place, around 200 people."

While hosting a benefit concert has become a tradition, Vellany stated the importance of this event and what it can do for the community.

"We feel that by bringing it back into the community it will give the younger and the older people a chance to come out and enjoy themselves, while at the same time worshipping God."

It will be at 51 Richfield Avenue on Sat. Nov. 11. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. before the concert kicks off at 7 p.m., tickets can be purchased by calling Chris Vellany at, 204-291-0199.
