RCMP and emergency services have been responding to several collisions throughout southern Manitoba on Friday in the midst of another blizzard.

The westbound lanes of Highway 1 between Headingley and Portage la Prairie are the most recent closure. Manitoba Infrastructure says that several collisions have occurred on the stretch of prairie highway.

A listener tells the radio station that traffic on the westbound lanes of Highway 1 approaching Portage la Prairie is "complete gridlock."

Earlier in the day emergency crews responded to a serious collision on the Yellowhead Highway near Newdale, in western Manitoba. Witnesses told the station they believe there were fatalities involved in that collision. 

The following highways are closed as of 1:10 p.m.

  • Highway 1, westbound lanes, from Headingley to Portage la Prairie
  • Highway 10, from Highway 25 to Highway 45
  • Highway 14, from Highway 75 to Winkler
  • Highway 16, from Strathclair to Newdale
  • Highway 16, from Minnedosa to PR 352
  • Highway 23, from Highway 3 to Highway 59
  • Highway 32, from Winkler to the US Border
  • Highway 75, from Winnipeg city limits to the US Border
  • Highway 201, from Highway 32 to Altona
  • Highway 243, from Highway 32 to Highway 30
