It appears a very close federal election race in a west Winnipeg riding is heading for a recount.

The Elections Canada website says Conservative incumbent Marty Morantz defeated Liberal Doug Eyolfson by only 24 votes.

Counting all the ballots in the riding of Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia-Headingley continued until almost 48 hours after polls closed Monday night.

Eyolfson says he anticipates a recount in the coming days.

The riding had been a highly contested one throughout the entire election. Both Liberal leader Justin Trudeau and Conservative leader Erin O'Toole made campaign stops in the riding early one in the campaign.

Morantz defeated Eyolfson in 2019 as well by under 1,000 votes.
