A former Winnipegger is turning heads in Southeastern Manitoba, busting a move on street corners most evenings.

To most people, the intersection of Steinbach's Main St. and Brandt St. is just another high traffic corridor but for one up-and-coming dancer, it is centre stage.

Grunthal Resident Kane Frieze grew up in the North End of Winnipeg where he developed a passion for moving and grooving to the beat. Now, he stands on the street corner most weekdays showing off his dance moves to the motoring public.

“I get a lot of honks and a lot of genuine smiles,” laughs Frieze who says people seem to generally appreciate his performance.

From 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. almost every evening Frieze lets loose on a small slab of concrete sidewalk next to the southbound traffic light. Whereas most people would tire from three straight hours of intensive cardio, for Frieze it is an agent of happiness and an outlet for stress.

“I have a lot of adrenaline in my soul, that is how I do what I do,” he says.

The 22-year-old says he has been dancing for half of his life and he hopes to eventually become a professional… though in some ways he already is. Usually, Frieze can be seen dancing with an orange cardboard guitar in his arms, advertising for the pizza place that is giving him his first regular paid gig. It is as an employee of Little Caesars that Frieze has been given an initial semi-real shot at showbusiness.

“It feels amazing cause it was always my dream to be a professional dancer,” he comments.

While he appreciates the ability to display his dance routines by the roadside, Frieze has his sights set on a much higher goal; to dance on stages much larger than the Steinbach curbside under the moniker ‘Novakane’, a stage name he and his friends came up with a few years ago.  Already trying to carve out his own niche as a creative artist, Frieze dresses in leather jackets covered in poems and stanzas he has written himself.

“My philosophy is don’t take life too seriously,” he says, “always enjoy the small moments, and if things get gloomy, just know there is always a smile out there waiting for you.”

While he waits for stardom to come calling, he says he will be trying to spread those smiles to onlookers one dance move at a time.
