Ten Manitobans are being honoured Monday night for their contributions to Friendly Manitoba at places like Siloam Mission, Agape Table, Booth University College, and many others.

During a ceremony at Government House, Gov. Gen. Julie Payette is honouring almost a dozen Manitobans for their volunteer work. Lt.-Gov. Janice C. Filmon will be bestowing the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers on behalf of the Governor-General.

“From the smallest community to the heart of our largest city, Manitobans are known for giving so much of their time, talent and creativity to make a difference in the world around them," Lt.-Gov. Filmon says in a release.

Ranging from thee years to three decades, a long list of Manitobans made the cut.

“I am so proud to have these Manitobans recognized nationally for their voluntary contributions within their communities and beyond."

The list of Winners include:

  • Gabriel Langlois, AKA 'Dancing Gabe,' for his daily volunteer work with St. Vital YMCA-YWCA's kid's corner for over 30 years. "Langlois is a beloved fixture at all Winnipeg sporting events since the 1980s, renowned for his dancing skills and his ability to rally the crowds and cheer for the home teams," the province says in a statement. He is a fixture at Winnipeg sporting events.
  • Sharon Faye Thorne is being recognized for her regular visits with ill members of the Salvation Army board of directors, organization of veterans’ luncheons for funerals, and her 22 years at the Royal Canadian Legion.
  • John Kroeker from Steinbach is being recognized for his decade of dedication to Steinbach Community Outreach and his time as a board member with Steinbach Mennonite Church.
  • Simryn Singh has been working with vulnerable, inner-city residents since 2017 with Agape Table. She is also the co-founder of  Langar Seva Winnipeg.
  • Vern Anderson's work with Siloam Mission, Rossbrook House, and many others is being recognized. The province says he played an important role with Booth University College's Indigenous culture goals.
  • Sandra Hamm is a volunteer with World Vision Winnipeg, organizing events for over a decade for the organization. 
  • Yvonne Savard is being awarded following her dedication to seniors Le Chalet de La Broquerie, and providing meals for grieving families in the Paroisse St. Joachim.
  • William Worden has been volunteering for over 30 years with the Queens’ Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada as well as working with Manitoba's Scottish Gentlemen’s Club.
  • Christopher Hall, a hockey coach, has spent close to 20 years training young athletes with Hockey Manitoba. He also focusses on improving the game's safety standards. 
  • Krista Laberge is being recognized for her Girl Guides of Canada volunteer work, as well as her work with the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, the Winnipeg Fringe Festival and Operation Red Nose. 

This award requires a nomination, as well as reference letters, and can take up to one year to receive a notification award.
