Few details have been released following a patient death at the Health Sciences Centre on Monday.

A Shared Health spokesperson wrote in an email that they are investigating a potential critical incident that occurred during a one-hour window on February 27 in the HSC Winnipeg emergency department.

The Manitoba Nurses Union says the death of a patient waiting for treatment in the emergency department of the province's largest hospital is unsettling but not unexpected.

Union president Darlene Jackson says nurses in the E-R at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg have been saying for some time that they feared such incidents would happen due to overcrowding and lack of staff.

When asked about the case at a news conference Wednesday, Health Minister Audrey Gordon would only say that she looks forward to receiving the results of an investigation into the death.

Manitoba Premier Heather Stephenson says an investigation into the death will be made public.

The province says its thoughts and prayers go out to the family for the loss of their loved one.
