Here's what you won't want to miss around Southern Manitoba this week.

Monday, May 15

  • Central Station Community Centre in Winkler is hosting a free barbeque from 5 to 7 pm. This celebration includes the anniversary of Café 545 and the grand opening of Winkler and District Food Cupboard. Central Station is located at 545 Industrial Drive.

Monday to Tuesday

  • Manitou swimming lesson registration will be held from 6 to 7:30 nightly. The first night is open to local residents only and all others can register on the following day.

Tuesday, May 16

  • A jazz coffee house is planned for 7 pm at the Xchange (Seeds Church), 116 Main Street, Altona. Music will be provided by the WC Miller Collegiate jazz choir and band ensemble.

Tuesday to Wednesday

  • Winkler Minor soccer registration nights take place from 6 to 8 pm at Winkler Rec Complex. This is for the Fall K-8 league. Cost is $35. You can also visit their website or find them on Facebook.

Wednesday, May 17

  • Registration for swimming lessons in Altona opens at Millennium Exhibition Centre. Hours are 8:30 to 5. You must register in person with phone entries being accepted the following day.

Wednesday to Thursday

  • The junior high students at Winkler Elementary School present “The Little Mermaid Junior” at 7 nightly at P.W. Enns Centennial Concert Hall. Advance tickets are $5, or $7 at the door. Ages 3 and under have free admission. Call the school office to reserve your tickets.

Thursday, May 18

  • Altona Senior Centre is having a Mexican Disco dinner buffet beginning at 5 pm. Pile your plate high with all your Mexican favourites. Tickets are $15 with tax deductible receipts available.
  • A safety presentation will be held from 10 am to 3 pm at Emerson New Horizon Hall. Guest presenters will speak on elder abuse, personal safety, frauds and scams, emergency preparedness, medication safety as well as safe banking practices. Register with Lorri at Emerson Franklin Senior Services at 204-427-2869. Handi-van transportation is available. Cost is $13 which includes a hot pork lunch.
  • A preschool wellness day is planned from 9 am to 3 pm at Winkler Emmanuel Mennonite Church. Children will be tested in speech, hearing, fine motor skills, vision, dental, and more. Call 204-331-8841 to register.
  • A waffle breakfast will be served from 9 am to noon at Winkler Senior Centre. Cost is $7.50 for Belgian waffles with fruit, sauce, whipped cream and coffee.

Friday, May 19

  • It's time for the summer charity barbeque and car show taking place from 4 to 8 pm at Carman Co-op. Proceeds go to Carman Palliative Care and the Patrick Mowbray Memorial Fund.
  • Admission is free to the spring craft and vendor sale at Lowe Farm Friendship Centre, from 4 to 8 pm. Many local vendors will have displays plus you can stop by for coffee and dainties.
  • “Walk for Alzheimer’s” is happening in Rosenort. The walk begins at Rosenort Housing Corp. For more details call Kathy at 204-325-5634 or visit the Alzheimer website.
  • The annual Palliative Care bake sale at Boundary Trails Health Centre is happening. It will be held in the entrance of the health centre beginning at 8:30.

Saturday, May 20

  • A country gospel jam session is planned at 7 pm at Winkler Senior Centre. Musicians bring your instruments, singers bring your voice or if you don’t sing or play, you can still come and enjoy the music.

Sunday, May 21

  • A music and missions fundraising supper is being held at Winkler EMMC. Supper is from 5 to 7 pm and the program follows at 7. Music will be by D’Friesens along with a report of recent missions to Bolivia and Paraguay. Admission by free will offering.
