Bitterly cold temperatures and biting windchills continue to envelop the province today.

Apart from a small region in the central part of the province — including Flin Flon, the Pas, and Norway House — a sea of red extreme cold warnings dominate the Environment Canada storm map as of 6 a.m.

An arctic airmass has settled over Saskatchewan bringing with it a high pressure system, according to Environment Canada. "We're getting a light west or northwest flow over the area with temperatures that are in the -30s and that's giving wind chill values in the -40 to -45 range," says meteorologist Dan Fulton.

Like most of Manitoba, Winnipeggers are waking up to frigid temperatures hovering around the -30 mark downtown and near -40 at the airport monitoring station.

"If you look at stations all around the Red River Valley, they're all pretty cold," says Fulton. "Where ever you are, if you're exposed to the wind it's a chilly morning."

Make sure to cover up as frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

Relief is in sight, however.

Temperatures are expected to rise drastically beginning Tuesday night as a warm front moves in.

"(On Wednesday) we should actually get all the way up to nearly zero," says Fulton about the shift in temperatures. Though the warm front will bring with it a light snow and gusting winds up to 60 km/h.

Wednesday's forecast high -1.
