In less than four hours on Friday, 15 volunteers working eight combines, three grain carts and four trucks helped harvest a 300-acre plot of canola for charity.

The 300 acre Common Ground Canadian Foodgrains Bank project is located four miles east of Rosenfeld on Highway 14.

Volunteer Kevin Nickel says the project is in its 11th year, and they were able to see a 42-bushel crop and should see a $60,000 donation.

Several combines work the field.

"It's a lot of fun to harvest a field in a short amount of time," Nickel says. "It's just a great community-building event, and you're raising money for such a basic human need... I think everybody finds the whole thing quite fulfilling."

He adds with the government's matching commitment, their donation multiplies. "Those dollars go such a long way in the developing world, it's a really big bang for our buck and our efforts," Nickel adds.

The group also thanks to all the supporters and donors who have helped cover their expenses.
