Despite the precipitation received in Winnipeg Tuesday night, the fire ban remains in effect inside the city.

The open-air fire ban, which has been in effect since the end of April, will continue into May Long Weekend.

"Within the City of Winnipeg, the fire ban remains in place," said Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) Assistant Chief, Mark Reshaur. "It will remain in place until we receive enough rain that it will alter the environmental conditions."

Reshaur says they don't know how much rain will be needed to lift the ban. He says they will have to evaluate the impact of the rain, which likely means any announcement would come after Thursday and Friday's forecasted rain.

The WFPS wants to remind residents that an open-air fire ban includes raised fire pits with lids. The only acceptable outdoor flame should be coming from a barbeque.

"We really need the public to cooperate with us on this one," Reshaur stressed. "We only have to wait a little while longer hopefully."

While wildfires happen for a number of reasons, Reshaur says they haven't been at too many fires that have started as a result of human error.
