Winnipeg firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from a single-storey retail building on Ellice Avenue early Sunday morning.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to the fire in the 700 block of Ellice just after 6:30 a.m.

Deteriorating conditions forced crews to transition from an initial offensive attack to an exterior, defensive attack. The WFPS drone, which is equipped with a thermal imaging camera, was used to help detect hotspots.

The fire wasn't declared under control until just after 11 a.m. April 11. The building is expected to be a complete loss.

Occupants of a home neighbouring the building were temporarily evacuated and the home suffered some heat and water damage from the nearby blaze.

No injuries were reported from the fire, the cause of which remains under investigation.
