While parts of eastern Manitoba had 50 cm of snowfall on Sunday and Monday, Winnipeg is expecting its first real taste of winter Tuesday. Thankfully, it will be nothing like what those in Berens River experienced.

Brad Vrolijk from Environment Canada says the system is expected to arrive around noon for the City of Winnipeg.

"We're just expecting light snow. It will persist through the afternoon and much of the night before kind of tapering off on Wednesday morning," Vrolijk says.

When it comes to accumulation, Vrolijk says, "It's a bit of a toss-up. Temperatures are going to be very close to the freezing mark so it's probably one of those situations where on grassy surfaces and things like that we might get a few centimetres piling up, whereas on sidewalks and roads that might be a little bit warmer it might be harder to see accumulation there. But I wouldn't be surprised to see a little bit of snow sticking to everything by Wednesday morning."

Vrolijk says that the far south-west of Manitoba may get up to 5 cm accumulating. "But, even that will have some compaction and melting, so we'll see how much actually ends up piling up there. These near-freezing snowfalls can always be tricky as far as how much actually stays on the ground once it falls."

Other weather forecasters are currently watching a system that they say could bring 15-20 cm of snow for the far south on Thursday.
