A Winnipeg Christian high school is hosting a fun and educational program for ages 8-18 this summer.

Rachel Smith is the Summer Program Director at Freedom International School and this is her first role. Previously she was a board member and volunteer at the school.

“The COVID-19 situation affected schooling for a lot of the students across Canada in general, especially our students here at Freedom School.” Smith says.

The school is geared towards those students who may be refugees, have English as a second language, or struggling with school programs.

“There is a lot that is done within the schools [around Winnipeg] that suites the demographics that we have here within the city, but there was a gap.” Shares Smith. “[For some of these students], they were attending high school having never been to school, having no literacy in their own language, and they were expected to be literate to the level of their Canadian peers in a language they were just learning.”

Their approach to summer school looks different from last year.
