Three and a half weeks ago, Manitobans were discouraged from hosting or attending garage sales. But that message has now changed.

On May 1, Manitoba’s Chief Provincial Public Health Officer said that even though COVID-19 restrictions would begin to loosen in our province, it was still too soon for garage sales. But now, as the province considers Phase 2 of its Restoring Safe Services plan, Dr. Brent Roussin is no longer ruling out garage sales.

He notes Manitobans have really helped to flatten the curve. And, even though Manitoba is gradually starting to re-open, this is not a return to normal. However, with respect to garage sales, Roussin says physical distancing and group sizes must be respected. According to the province, gathering size limits are maxed at 25 people indoors and 50 people outdoors.

Dr. Roussin says one of the risks with garage sales is that you are dealing with frequently touched surfaces and objects.

“So be cautious with it,” he says. “Certainly, the orders don’t prohibit it, given the group sizes and it’s outdoors.”

He reminds garage sale goers to wash your hands frequently and ensure there is not overcrowding.

Meanwhile, Dr. Roussin says the province hopes to announce this week a start date for commencing Phase 2 of its Restoring Safe Services plan. A preliminary draft was unveiled last week and Dr. Roussin says he does not anticipate the final draft will look much different.

“Certainly, we are getting some feedback and as we revisit the plan, there will probably be certain changes to it,” he says. “But I don’t think there will be any substantial differences in that plan.”
