The hot temperatures managed to break daily records across Manitoba this weekend. 

An area of high pressure brought 30C-plus temperatures to Manitoba throughout the weekend, leading to a number of broken daily records.

Winnipeg broke two daily maximum temperature records, posting a scorching 37.1C on Saturday, August 11, breaking the 34.9C record set in 1978. Then it managed to get warmer on Sunday, with the thermometer showing 37.5C, breaking the 1972 record of 35.0C.

10 different communities set a new daily record high temperature on Sunday, most breaking the existing record by more than two degrees. Those included:

  • Brandon - 38.2C (old 35.6C set 1897)
  • Carberry - 38.4C (old 33.9C set 1965)
  • Deerwood - 38.7C (old 35.6C set 1955)
  • Gretna - 37.6C (old 35.2C set 2015)
  • Melita - 39.0C (old 36.1C set 1965)
  • Morden - 39.1C (old 36.1C set 1910)
  • Pilot Mound - 36.7C (old 33.9C set 1965)
  • Portage la Prairie - 37.7C (old 35.0 set 1955)
  • Sprague - 34.0C (old 33.3C set 1978)
  • Winnipeg - 37.5C (old 35.0C set 1972)

Brandon, Morden, and Steinbach also broke daily highs on Saturday.

The high-pressure system is moving on from Winnipeg and cooler temperatures will cover most of southern Manitoba over the next two days.
