The Fairmont Hotel in downtown Winnipeg has its rooms lit up in the shape of a Christmas tree to bring joy to passersby.

"We've been thinking about how we can contribute to bringing out some positive Christmas energy and brightness to our city," says Fawn Benjaminson, the Director of Sales at the Fairmont.

A few teams of people brought the visual decorations to life.

"The logistics of coordinating our live Christmas tree took a little bit of time with a coordinated effort. We plotted out which rooms we'd be lighting up, the colours, as well as the inhouse guests, that they were not staying in any of those rooms," she says.

The hotel will keep these lights for any hours that it is dark for the remainder of this week.

The hospitality industry is another sector of work that has been hit hard by the pandemic.

"It's definitely had a large impact on the industry. It feels like everyone is just on pause at the moment."

The first time staff lit up the whole hotel in this way was back in March of 2020.

"At the beginning of the pandemic, we actually lit up the hotel in the shape of the heart," says Benjaminson.
