No injuries are being reported after a common household device created an accidental fire.

On Sunday night, a house in the St. John's neighbourhood caught fire. At 9:58 p.m. the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was alerted of a two-story home in the 200 block of Atlantic Avenue catching fire.

By the time crews arrived, the household had already evacuated after being alerted by their alarm. Launching an offensive attack, the fire became under control at 10:31 p.m.

Two of the six household members were assessed by paramedics but did not require medical attention.

After investigating, the WFPS is determining the fire started due to an overloaded and overheated extension cord.

"Extension cords are designed to dissipate heat along their length. They should never be bundled together or covered by carpets or other combustible items that can cause heat to accumulate. They should not be used where they may be subjected to mechanical damage such as in doorways or other locations they may get pinched or stepped on," the WFPS says in a statement.

If a cord shows signs of damage, the WFPS says to discard them.
