The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is investigating after a police incident turned fatal Saturday evening.

Amaranth RCMP first received a call about a disturbance involving a weapon at around 5 p.m. They called on the Manitoba First Nation Police Service, the police of jurisdiction in Sandy Bay First Nation, to help with the call. 

By the time officers arrived at the scene, the suspect had fled. However, the RCMP and the Manitoba First Nation Police Service were able to track the 27-year-old, who was armed with multiple weapons, to an open outdoor area in Sandy Bay First Nation.

The encounter between the police and the suspect resulted in an RCMP officer using a firearm and injuring the suspect. Despite life-saving measures attempted by officers, the suspect was pronounced deceased.

No one else was injured. 

Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services is currently in the community investigating. Meanwhile, the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is conducting its investigation.
