One of the most well-known charities in the world will once again be able to accept foreign donations after the Indian government quickly reversed an earlier decision.

Over 5,700 charities lost their FCRA (Foreign Contribution Regulation Act) registration in India at the end of December 2021. Organizations in the country had been required to submit renewal applications in the fall and thousands were shocked to find out their renewals were not approved. That included the Missionaries of Charity, the Catholic charity started by Mother Teresa.

“We never expected that our registration could be cancelled but it happened,” Sunita Kumar, spokesperson for MC tells the Vatican News.

The Vatican News says that India's Ministry of Home Affairs announced a reversal of the decision for MC on January 7.

“We are happy that the restoration of our license happened without much delay,” Kumar says.
