Even with our world as interconnected as it is, one third of all humans have never heard of Jesus.

May 23 represents the International Day for the Unreached, Mission Network News reports.

The day is one that the Alliance for the Unreached uses to raise awareness about those around the globe who have still never heard the Gospel.

Wayne Pederson is the president of Reach Beyond, an international ministry that aims to reach the one in three who have yet to hear about Jesus. Pederson says many reasons contribute to why certain people groups are harder to reach than others.

"Some of the most difficult to reach [live in] countries where there’s persecution, where there’s government interference, where there are cultural obstacles to not only receiving Christ but even hearing about Christ," says Pederson.

In countries like China, Pakistan, and North Korea, governments and culture often work against the spreading of the Gospel.

May 23 serves as a day to remember the Great Commission, dictated by Jesus to his disciples prior to his ascension to heaven. Christians have been called by Christ to share the news of Jesus and eternal life with the world.

"We chose Pentecost Sunday because that’s the day that the church was born. Peter addressed [the crowd] and 3,000 people came to Christ," Pederson says.

With today's technology, even harder-to-reach groups are becoming reachable.

"Today we’re living in an age where with the technology we have, we see a Pentecost every hour. Every hour 3000 people are coming to know Christ. We have shortwave, we have satellite, we have digital technology, podcasts, and apps that we can use."
