The Canadian Centre for Child Protection and the Manitoba RCMP are offering similar tips for keeping your kids safe.

"Don't go anywhere alone. For younger children we teach parents and educators to tell children, and of course we teach children themselves, if someone asks you to go somewhere and your parents don't know, shout no. It's a very important tool... we're really increasing children's personal safety skills so they know what to do in an uncomfortable situation, and also (so) that they recognize what an uncomfortable situation might look like," says Jessica Huzyk, program manager in the Child Safety and Family Advocacy division of the Canadian Centre for Child Protection.

The RCMP also recommends using the buddy system; both police and Huzyk say kids should trust their instincts. Huzyk says not every dangerous person will look like it.

Today is Missing Children's Day. Huzyk says it's an important time to create awareness.

"It's a reminder that this is something that families wake up to and go to sleep to... the good news is is that most missing children are found quite quickly and are returned home safely to their families, but there are many missing children that remain missing," she says.
