The Winnipeg Jets opened their four-game homestand with a 3-1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs Wednesday night at Bell MTS Place.

Auston Matthews and Zach Hyman scored first period goals for the Leafs and Alexander Kerfoot extended Toronto's lead with a shorthanded goal at 16:40 of the second period.

For Matthews, it was his NHL leading 24th goal of the season.

Josh Morrissey had the lone goal for the Jets on the power play with 2:45 remaining in the middle period.

Kyle Connor drew an assist on Morrissey's second of the season and now has points in four consecutive games.

Winnipeg goaltender Connor Hellebuyck stopped 23 shots while Maple Leafs netminder Jack Campbell made 26 saves and is undefeated in seven games.

Jets captain Blake Wheeler was injured in the first period and did not return.

Winnipeg had a 9-7-1 record during the month of March.

The Jets (22-13-2) and Maple Leafs meet again Friday night at Bell MTS Place.
