The organist for the Winnipeg Jets is putting on a concert featuring the Open Sky Orchestra to raise money for cancer.

On May 4 and 5, Trevor Olfert, the organist for the Jets over the past season, is once again joining with the Open Sky Orchestra for the sixth year in a row. Together, they are putting on a Cancer Benefit Concert to benefit Children's Cancer Fund of HSC and multiple myeloma research.

"There was someone I worked with whose mother was going through myeloma cancer," Olfert said when asked about the origins of the concert. "I thought it would be a great way to connect with her and the myeloma community."

The Open Sky Orchestra, which was formed 13 years ago by Olfert, contains 40 Winnipeg musicians that have been as young as ten-years-old. In additions to the typical instruments, this orchestra also contains electric guitars, bass, keyboards, percussion, and for this concert, even a singer.

All the songs have been written or arranged by Olfert. Some songs are from top 40 radio, others are just songs with a positive message.

Olfert says that music is something that he loves to do, so if he can connect it with a positive cause, he will do it.

"We've raised almost $75,000 previous to this year," Olfert said about continuing the concert year after year. "It's great to see how this community has come together and I feel like I'm a part of that community."

"I see it as my way of being a witness to the community."

Being the organist for the Jets had some perks beyond just the game. Every concert has prizes to win and this year the prizes include two Jets electric guitars that have been signed by most of the team. Both will be auctioned off at the event.

"The year was awesome," Olfert said about his year with the Winnipeg Jets. "That was a really neat opportunity."
