A new film called Jesus Revolution is looking to recapture the powerful faith movement that happened in Southern California.

In the 1960s and 1970s, there was a movement of people that some coined the 'Jesus Movement.' This is the basis for Jesus Revolution.

"Now I‘m finally feel free to say something….Wait til you see this story," says Jonathan Roumie on Facebook, talking about the new film.

Roumie plays Jesus in the hit TV series The Chosen and he'll be playing a hippie preacher named Lonnie Frisbee in the film. Kelsey Grammer will be the lead, starring as the late Chuck Smith, the pastor who founded the Calvary Chapel movement and was a mentor to Greg Laurie.

"We're incredibly excited to have Kelsey Grammer join the cast of Jesus Revolution!" says Kingdom Story Company, one of the producers of the film, on Facebook. Lionsgate will join as producers on it as well.

The Erwin brothers, Jon and Andrew will be part of the team of directors for the movie. They directed other hit Christian films such as I Can Only Imagine, I Still Believe, and the most recent film released in 2021, American Underdog.

"The movie is set in a very specific time and place, but the theme of finding a deeper meaning to life, in the midst of a fractured and broken world, is timeless," says Jon. "In his iconic performances, Kelsey has a proven ability to connect with audiences in a real, vulnerable way, which will make him a tremendous presence in this film."

The film is set to be released in 2023.

"Jesus has been a profound influence in my life. I am proud to be a part of this film,” Grammer says in an interview with Christian Headlines. He is well known for his T.V. role as the lead in Frasier which ran from 1993 until 2004.

The film also stars Anna Grace Barlow (The Big Lead, NCIS), who plays Greg Laurie’s friend Cathe.

"The true story in Jesus Revolution reminds us that hope is never lost, and through even the most challenging of times, with faith, change is possible," says Director Jon.
