Joyous gospel music will be filling homes this weekend as a new movie centres around an assistant pastor leading her first jamboree right before Christmas.

Kirk Franklin's A Gospel Christmas zooms in on the life of Olivia, a brand-new assistant pastor at a Black  gospel church who was promoted to lead pastor just in time for the church's event of the season, the Winter Jamboree.

The Lifetime film is a Christmas romance but is filled with the gospel thanks to Kirk Franklin's tunes, including "Jesus Is The Reason For The Season." The movie leans heavily on Franklin's music and asked him for his input.

"I was invited to participate and saw how much it was leaning into the music that I was blessed to write several years ago, it made me excited and I wanted to be more part of the narrative [and] the architecture of the movie," Franklin tells VIBE.

Not long after Franklin took on a larger role.

The movie centers around Olivia preparing the church choir for the Winter Jamboree and the Christmas sermon.

While is it meant to be a fun film, Franklin tells the Christian Post that the movie won't be entirely light-hearted, including touching on hurt done in the church.

"I think sometimes we make the building or institution this magical kingdom … which is the mistake of the culture to create this misnomer that there is a spirit of protection that has to be implied."

The movie airs for the first time on Saturday.
