Winnipeg police say that a teenage girl has died following an officer-involved shooting on a busy Winnipeg street Wednesday evening.

The incident occurred on Lagimodiere Boulevard at Fermor Avenue just after 5:30 p.m. according to the WPS in a release.

On Thursday morning the WPS confirmed that a 16-year-old girl died after being rushed to hospital in critical condition.

Police also say that a number of other individuals were taken into custody.

Witnesses say it appeared that the police were pursuing a dark-coloured Jeep, which ended up on the median of Lagimodiere. A number of other vehicles were also involved in the collision.

"It's believed those vehicles were struck during this incident. They're not directly involved otherwise," Murray says.

They say at least a dozen police vehicles were at the scene as well as ambulances and fire trucks.

A checkstop vehicle was also on scene at the incident. WPS Public Information Officer Jay Murray says the presence of the vehicle, however, does not indicate the involvement of an impaired driver. Those vehicles are often used in serious incident investigations.

Murray said on Wednesday evening that it was too early in the investigation to say whether WPS officers were shot during the incident.

Traffic had been closed in all directions at Lagimodiere Boulevard and Fermor Avenue. However, one lane of traffic is now open in each direction for Fermor Avenue. Lagimodiere remains closed in all directions.

"Police officers are trained quite well to try and take these situations and bring them under control as quick as they can," says Murray. "Sometimes, that involves use of force, unfortunately. That's what happened here."

Anytime an officer fires a weapon, Murray says it is considered a use of force, though he reiterated it is too soon to say exactly what happened in this incident.

The WPS will hold a press conference Thursday afternoon to provide more details.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is investigating.

Murray says the investigation remains ongoing at this time.
