A gospel singer from Winnipeg is releasing a song of hope, drawing people back to focus on God.

"It just basically talks about how, through all the problems and the chaos, we want to be close to Jesus and be as much in love with Him and everyone," says Emmanuel Briggs.

'Close to You' was released November 1 with a lyric video posted to YouTube

"The Bible says to love the Lord with all our hearts and love our neighbour as ourselves. That's the inspiration for the song."

The new tune intertwines English lyrics alongside African lyrics as well.

"I had a lot of African language in the song but the production and instrumental is something that can connect with everyone all over the world."

Briggs lives in Winnipeg with his family but he was born and raised in Nigeria.

"I didn't have an easy life growing up. I remember being unable to go to school somedays because I couldn't afford the transport fare to go to school."

Briggs is married and he and his wife have a daughter.

"It's great being here in Canada now because my daughter doesn't have to go through what I went through."

In 2012, Briggs came to Canada to complete his University education before he started pursuing music.

"Over [there] you basically have to pay for everything, and it can be challenging and expensive sometimes."

He sings to inspire and motivate others for the gospel.

"Over the years just staying close to God and keeping the faith alive has really helped me and I'm really grateful for that."
