Starting tomorrow, the "paper or plastic" question will be history at Sobeys.

Today is the last day Sobeys will be using plastic grocery bags. Sobeys will be reverting to the use of paper bags at their tills. Shoppers will be charged 10 cents per bag, and proceeds from the bag will be used to plant trees in Canada.

Sobeys says a combined total of 225 million plastic grocery bags were being used every year by its stores. They also add that each plastic bag that leaves their store takes approximately 500 years to break down naturally.

"Plastic use is not something we can recycle our way out of, it will take a combination of reducing, reusing and recycling to make an impactful and sustainable change," Sobeys says in a statement.

Shoppers are encouraged to bring their own reusable bags to the stores or purchase them at Sobeys.
