A woman is dead and a man is in police custody facing several charges after a vehicle fled from police and crashed into another car Monday afternoon in Winnipeg.

The Winnipeg Police Service says that officers attempted to pull over an eastbound car at noon on Provencher Boulevard. Police allege in a press release that the vehicle fled "at a high rate of speed, eventually losing control where it mounted the concrete median, and struck an oncoming westbound vehicle."

The suspect driver exited the vehicle and attempted to flee but was quickly taken into police custody.

An adult female, who was the lone driver of the other vehicle, succumbed to her injuries.

The investigation was taken over by the Homicide Unit.

Police have charged a 31-year-old Winnipeg man with:

- Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance Causing Death
- Operation of a Conveyance Causing Death while Impaired to Any Degree by BAC or Drug or Combination of Both
- Flight While Pursued by Peace Officer
- Operation of a Conveyance While Prohibited Pursuant to Federal or Provincial Act

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has been notified and will assume responsibility for the investigation in accordance with section 65(4) of the Police Services Act.
