A 56-year-old man is dead after he was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross a highway just north of Winnipeg in the RM of West St. Paul, RCMP say.

The Manitoba RCMP says in a release that the collision occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. They say that the man, from Little Grand Rapids, was attempting to cross Highway 9 south of Allenford Drive when a southbound SUV struck him.

The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene. Mounties say that the 21-year-old female driver of the SUV, from Winnipeg, and her 23-year-old male passenger, were physically uninjured and remained on scene. The driver and passenger are both cooperating with investigators, according to police.

An RCMP Forensic Collision Reconstructionist is assisting with the ongoing investigation. The highway was closed for several hours, into the early morning hours of Thursday while police investigated the scene.
