A man is dead after police allege he barricaded himself in a home following an exchange of gunfire with Mounties who were attempting to execute an arrest warrant in southwestern Manitoba.

The Manitoba RCMP says in a release that officers from the Blue Hills and Killarney Detachment went to a home in the RM of Prairie Lakes to serve the warrant at 9:50 on Friday evening.

Police say that when officers arrived, the 38-year-old male suspect was in his yard and ran to his home when noticing police coming. "The male suspect reached the front of his residence, retrieved a firearm, and shot towards the officers," the release alleges.

Police and the man exchanged gunfire and the man then barricaded himself in the residence.

Several other police resources were called in, including Manitoba RCMP’s Critical Incident Command, the Emergency Response Team, a crisis negotiation team, and officers from other detachments.

The RCMP says that at some point, officers saw smoke coming from the home and it became engulfed in flames.

"Officers remained at the scene overnight and contained the area," the release says, and "at approximately 7 a.m., on July 23, 2022, a body was recovered within the home. An autopsy has been scheduled to confirm the identity."

The RCMP says no officers were injured in the incident.

The Manitoba RMCP’s Forensic Identification Services continues to assist with the investigation and officers with Major Crime Services are monitoring, and the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has been notified and have taken carriage of the investigation.
