A 21-year-old man is in police custody after he spent several days racing through a Winnipeg neighbourhood in a stolen vehicle.

Residents of the Southdale neighbourhood had been complaining of a white minivan racing through the area throughout the weekend and into Monday. Several residents had shared in a Facebook group that a young male driver had driven at dangerous speeds while adults and children were around. Many said that when they signalled the driver to slow down he responded aggressively and with obscene gestures.

On Monday evening, at approximately 5:40 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service says that officers responded to the 1000 block of Beaverhill Boulevard for the report of an intoxicated adult male causing a disturbance at a retail coffee shop.

The WPS says in a release that East District General Patrol officers went to the business and located the suspect nearby and placed him under arrest without incident. An unoccupied 2023 Chrysler Pacifica was located nearby, stuck in mud in the median of Lakewood Boulevard and Bishop Grandin Boulevard.

Police say that their investigation has determined the suspect they were called to deal with at the coffee shop is the same suspect who had been operating the white minivan in the Southdale area in a dangerous manner. The WPS says they had received several calls for service from members of the public.

Officers confirmed the involved vehicle had previously been reported stolen from an auto rental business in the 300 block of Pembina Highway on April 3.

During a search of the stolen vehicle, officers recovered a CO²- powered handgun, which was seized as evidence.

The 21-year-old male is facing a total of seven charges, including three counts of Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order, Possession of a Weapon, Carrying Concealed Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000, Fail to Comply with Condition of Probation Order.
