A Winnipeg man is facing the heat after starting a fire and injuring several neighbours.

A fire started at the 500 block of McDermot Avenue last night after a man high on meth placed his shoes in the oven.

The 48-year-old was experiencing paranoia due to the drugs in his system and caused the building to catch fire.

Tenants in the apartment building heard a loud bang and were quickly alerted to the fire.

Residents first attempted to put out the fire with extinguishers. Emergency crews later arrived at the building, fully extinguishing the blaze. As the residents were leaving the building, the perpetrator stabbed one man and assaulted a woman with an unknown object.

Police arrived at the scene took the man in custody. Both of the assailant's victims suffered minor injuries.

Winnipeg Police Services are charging the man with six counts of Arson with Disregard for Human Life, two counts of Assult with a Weapon, and Arson Causing Damage to Property.
