A crash at 659 Young Street on Friday morning is being investigated after a man allegedly stole an ambulance, crashing it into a building.

According to witnesses, paramedics were in the area of Sherbrook Street and William Avenue and noticed a man who appeared to be in distress.

The two personal stopped and exited the vehicle with the intention to aid the man. Immediately, the man threatened the workers to the extent where the workers were required to push their emergency buttons, signally distress to the Winnipeg Police Service.

The time between pulling over and pressing the emergency button was 70 seconds.

 

The man then jumped into the cab, driving a short while before crashing into a community centre at 659 Young Street.

"We are seeing daily levels of violence that are concerning," Constable Robb Carver says.

The Police are unable to share information regarding who the man is or how old they are.

Police have recovered the damaged emergency vehicle and the suspect is in custody.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service says the paramedic workers were shaken by the incident. 

Investigations are ongoing.
